Senior Instrument Designer – Oil & Gas (10+ Years Experience)
Location: Office-Based (Chennai) · Full-Time · Instrumentation Department
Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Instrument Designer with 10+ years of proven expertise in the oil & gas industry. The role involves preparing and reviewing detailed instrumentation design deliverables, 2D/3D modeling, developing hook-up drawings, routing cable trays, and coordinating with multi-discipline teams to ensure high-quality engineering outputs.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed instrument hook-up drawings, installation drawings, support details, and wiring diagrams.
- Perform instrument location studies, cable routing, and 3D model coordination (SP3D / AVEVA / PDMS).
- Generate field installation layouts including instrument layouts, cable tray layouts, and marshalling cabinet layouts.
- Review and update P&IDs for instrument-related requirements and ensure design consistency.
- Prepare material take-offs (MTOs) and instrument BOQs.
- Review vendor documents (wiring diagrams, GA drawings) for instrument packages.
- Coordinate with process, piping, electrical, and control system teams for integrated design solutions.
- Support construction teams with technical clarifications and respond to site queries.
- Ensure compliance with project standards, IEC/ISA codes, and company specifications.
- Guide and support junior designers in project execution and quality checks.
Minimum Qualifications
- Diploma in Instrumentation / Electronics / Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical qualification.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in instrumentation design for oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical, or EPC projects.
- Strong knowledge of industrial instrumentation, control systems, and field installation practices.
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and 3D design tools (SP3D / AVEVA / PDMS).
- Good understanding of P&IDs, control philosophies, and instrument data management.
- Strong knowledge of IEC, ISA, API, and other relevant international standards.
- Ability to work with cross-disciplinary teams and manage design interfaces.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in large EPC/EPCM oil & gas projects.
- Exposure to DCS/ESD/F&G system layouts and panel wiring.
- Experience in site surveys, as-built documentation, and construction support.
- Knowledge of SMART instrumentation (SPI) will be an added advantage.
This is a fully office-based position. Candidates must be available to work at office.
